Broken (In the Best Possible Way)
National Student Show | 2024
Graphis | Honorable Mention | 2024
This book is about Jenny Lawson’s journey through her mental health. The concept was a broken doll repaired with gold with flowers coming out of the head. The inspiration behind fixing the doll with gold was a Japanese art form that highlights the flaws of a piece showing that even though things may be broken they can still be beautiful. This art form is called Kintsugi and is briefly talked about in the book. Every flower was chosen specifically for its meanings. Overall when looking at the piece you see that Lawson sees the broken in her but accepts it as beautiful and actively works to keep her thoughts positive even though her illnesses fight to say otherwise. This book was an inspiration to all struggling with mental illness.
Moth Balls
National Student Show 2024
For this project, I was tasked to find a very mundane item from the hardware store and then repackage it. The product I chose was moth balls. This product kills moths to prevent them from leaving holes in your clothes. My concept is ghost moths that were flying around the box. Moths are attracted to light so I wanted to play with the idea of light and dark by only using black and white.
Medusa
National Student Show | 2024
Graphis | Honorable Mention | 2024
For this project, we were tasked to make a two-color vintage monster movie poster. I hand-carved 2 pieces of linoleum to print this piece and used an overprinting technique to get the third color. Since I am a huge nerd for Greek mythology, naturally I chose to do Medusa. I made her head floating to represent how she gets beheaded later in her story. I wanted her eyes to appear glowing against the green so I chose to use the bright pink because of how contrasting the colors are.
