La Cannoleria Siciliana

Creative Quarterly #75 | Winner

Graphis New Talent | Honorable Mention | 2024

Based in Rome, Italy, La Cannoleria Siciliana is a pastry shop that specializes in Sicilian cannolis and seeks to share artisanal goods. My objective was to connect the brand to its Sicilian roots as their point of difference is their specialty and sale of Sicilian goods. For the logo and pattern designs, I took inspiration from Sicily, the southern province of Italy, and its textile industry as it is the heart of the textile industry in Italy, featuring geometric and floral patterns. The symbol logo draws inspiration from the Trinacria, the symbol of Sicily, that is a gorgon (like Medusa) with three legs and sprouts of wheat coming off the gorgon, which means to bring good luck, and favorable harvest. For the logotype, I took inspiration from Italian signage and type designer Louise Fili, who takes inspiration from Italian type design. In the color palette, red expresses the passion behind the artisanship and cuisine of Italy to honor tradition and deliver quality; blue conveys the knowledge of Sicilian goods; goldrepresents the purity of Italian ingredients and Roman mythology.

Stiricide

Graphis New Talent | Honorable Mention | 2024

Stiricide is a typographic poster that conveys the meaning of the dead word "stiricide". While ideating, I focused on how I could convey a verb, as "stiricide" means the ongoing action of falling icicles off a house. My solution was to make the letters homes. I used the isometric illustration style to create the illusion of three-dimensional buildings, designing different home styles as a home, while keeping the letter legibile. When deciding my color palette, I took inspiration from the understanding that heavy icicles normally form during the winter, when it has snowed. Thus, a monochrome teal-blue color scheme helps convey the mood of icy winter.

Cailler

Cailler is the oldest chocolate brand in the world, and the only Swiss brand to utilize sweet condensed milk in its chocolate. Given its history and connection to the Swiss Alps, my objective was to make the packaging reminiscent of Swiss culture. The idea for the die-cut packaging takes inspiration from Swiss paper cut, Scherenschnitt (“Scissor Cutting”) is a traditional folk art dating from the 1500s in Switzerland. Symmetry, an important design element in Swiss design, is achieved by folding the paper in half. Traditionally Swiss paper cuts capture a theme, landscapes, or traditions, but I decided to capture the aesthetic geometrical patterns of traditional Swiss folk clothing patterns while drawing inspiration from symmetry in Art Deco that emulate each chocolate flavor. For inspiration on the line work, I looked to Swiss architecture, particularly of the Bauhaus movement. I made the packaging entirely in German, since most people in Switzerland speak German. From left to right, the flavors are Almond Milk Chocolate, Alpine Milk Chocolate, Hazelnut Milk Chocolate, and Dark Chocolate.
